Caribbean Culture Week™ Fact Sheet

What is Caribbean Culture Week

Caribbean Culture Week™ is a week-long collaboration between individuals, businesses and organizations in celebration of Caribbean culture. Events and activities will be staged at venues across New York City celebrating the Fine Arts, Dance, Theatre, Popular Music, Literature, Children and Cuisine of the Caribbean. Individuals, Businesses and Organizations can participate in Caribbean Culture Week™ as sponsors of the collaboration or in staging one of the various events make up Caribbean Culture Week™.

Why Caribbean Culture Week

Caribbean Americans constitute a significant and growing component of America’s Black population; and while people of Caribbean ancestry have made significant contribution to the American cultural landscape, much of this contribution is still under- exposed. While the region is known for its pulsating reggae and calypso rhythms, it white sand beaches and spicy cuisine, much remains unknown of the richness of the region's cultural asset such as its writers, visual and performing artists. The object of Caribbean Culture Week™ is to put the spotlight on the various components of the region’s culture. In 2006 the U.S. Congress   passed legislation designating June   as Caribbean Heritage Month. While this is welcomed and important development ,the link between Caribbean born Americans and  the native born African Americans must remain intact and strengthened. So even while we celebrate Caribbean heritage separately in June, we must  still embrace our place as part of the African American family. Caribbean Culture Week™ is an attempt to celebrate Caribbean culture as part of the broader celebration of African American culture, hence it occurs in Black History Month.

Who Are Behind Caribbean Culture Week?

The Event is produced by TSO Productions, a Caribbean Owned enterprise with extensive experience in the production of Caribbean cultural events.
